Federal BOP Release Meaning
The BOP Inmate Locator shows federal custody records from 1982 forward. A past Release Date paired with “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” confirms that BOP custody ended on the displayed date. It does not prove the end of federal supervised release or rule out a state, local, USMS, or immigration hold.
A future date is projected and may change through sentence recalculation or First Step Act processing. “UNKNOWN” means the date is undetermined, not that release occurred. Report only what the federal record establishes.
Search Federal BOP Releases
Number search is most precise. A BOP Register Number commonly uses the format #####-###, and the locator supports other federal identifiers. Name search requires first and last name, with optional middle name, race, age, and sex filters. Exact name variants may matter.
- Choose number or name search.
- Enter the federal identifier when known.
- Match name and biographical fields.
- Read Release Date and Location or status together.
- Check the federal docket for later custody orders.
- Use BOP records channels when the result is incomplete.
BOP says the locator updates daily. A recent court event or transfer may not align instantly with every system, so compare dates and custodians.
Federal BOP Locator Fields
Results provide name, register number, age, race, sex, Release Date, and Location. Each field helps distinguish records, but release and location carry the custody meaning.
| Field | Use |
|---|---|
| Register number | Stable federal identifier |
| Release Date | Past departure or projected date |
| Location | Facility or released status |
| Biographical fields | Identity matching |
A federal result should not be used as a substitute for Norman County Sheriff or NWRCC records. It applies only when federal custody is independently indicated.
Federal BOP Records Contact
No BOP facility contact card can truthfully be localized to Norman County because no federal prison is located there. Use the system locator first. For a fuller record, BOP FOIA may require identity certification, including DOJ-361. Pre-1982 federal records may require the National Archives.

Official locator record explanation
No physical BOP prison in Norman County
The federal court docket can identify sentence, release orders, and transfers. The actual holding facility owns day-to-day custody facts before BOP commitment.
BOP and Norman Transfers
A Norman County jail departure can lead to federal custody through a writ, federal charge, or transfer. During federal pretrial custody, USMS may use local, state, private, or BOP partner beds. The person might not yet have a useful BOP locator record. Read the federal docket and identify the custodian.
Once committed to BOP and entered into its system, the BOP locator becomes meaningful. The USMS custody route is different because the Marshals Service publishes no released-prisoner locator.
Federal Release and Supervision
Release from prison and end of a federal sentence are not identical. A person may leave BOP custody and begin federal supervised release. The public BOP result does not provide a complete supervision record. Federal court documents and the responsible probation office are the appropriate sources for terms or later proceedings.
Do not substitute the BOP Release Date for an ICE release date, a USMS transfer time, or a Norman County jail exit. Each authority records its own event.
Federal Detainers After Release
A detainer or another sovereign’s authority can produce a transfer at the end of BOP custody. A “Released” result may therefore coexist with new custody elsewhere. Check the docket and any named receiving authority. If immigration custody is indicated, use ICE ODLS rather than BOP.
Angle K applies directly: the custody question is “released from which system, to whom?” Separate answers prevent an ended BOP term from being mistaken for release into the community.
Federal Released Versus Held
A current federal prisoner has a facility in Location and may have a projected date. A former BOP prisoner has a past date and released status. A person in USMS partner custody may require a docket and facility call instead.
| Situation | Best source |
|---|---|
| BOP prisoner | BOP Locator |
| Past BOP release | Past date plus released status |
| USMS pretrial custody | Federal docket and partner facility |
| ICE custody | ICE ODLS |
Match the source to the custodian and the date at issue.
Federal BOP Historical Records
The locator’s 1982 boundary matters for an old release. A blank result for an earlier case does not prove the person was never incarcerated. BOP points older research to the National Archives. Modern records can require a BOP records request and identity certification. Keep the register number because names and spellings can change.
A sound history separates sentence, BOP custody, and later supervision. The docket establishes the judgment and orders. BOP records establish prison custody and departure. Federal probation concerns supervised release. If another authority received the person, that office creates the next record. Do not compress all stages into one release label.
Date each locator observation. A projected field may change after recalculation. A past date paired with released status is stronger for BOP departure. For a Norman County connection, confirm whether the federal matter was separate from a county case or followed a transfer. Neither office can certify the other system’s exit.
Note: The BOP locator is a federal prison record, not a nationwide jail or detention search.
BOP Date Verification Steps
First decide whether a displayed date is past, future, or unknown. Read a past date with Location or status. A future date is projected. An unknown date provides no conclusion. Match the register number to the case so a similar name is not mistaken for the right person.
Compare the locator with the judgment and later orders. Sentence changes and recalculation can move a forecast. If another authority receives the person, identify it. A state, local, or ICE record may continue the timeline after BOP ends.
Allow for the daily update cycle on recent events. For history, save the record explanation and request fuller documents when needed. BOP’s concise public fields are not a complete case history.
No BOP prison is in Norman County. A local tie does not make county records the source for federal release. Follow the federal identifier and BOP status.
The federal register number remains the best link between the locator, judgment, and requested record. Record it with each dated result.
BOP Release Record Reconciliation
Start with the register number because it joins the locator result to the federal judgment and BOP request. Record the date the locator was checked, the exact Release Date, and Location or status. A past date without the accompanying status is incomplete. A projected date must be labeled as projected.
If BOP says “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody,” check the federal docket for supervised release and later custody orders. Federal supervised release occurs outside prison but remains a legal supervision term. BOP’s public locator does not supply the full supervision record. The responsible federal probation office and court docket cover that stage.
When another authority receives the person, create a second custody entry rather than overwriting the BOP release. ICE uses ODLS. A state uses its corrections system. USMS pretrial or transport custody requires the docket and actual partner facility. Each source establishes release from its own system only.
For a Norman connection, compare the local transfer date with the federal admission and later BOP departure. The dates may be separated by USMS processing. A county release record does not establish federal release, and a BOP result does not establish the earlier county door-out time.
Identity filters need care when no register number is known. The BOP name route requires first and last name and permits middle name, race, age, and sex filters. Begin with reliable fields and compare the returned register number to the court case. A spelling variation can hide a result, while broad terms can return the wrong person. Once matched, preserve the number for later checks. If the locator shows “UNKNOWN,” contact the proper records channel instead of substituting a court estimate. The label means BOP has not supplied a determined public release date.
